In this how to video, we'll look at how to design your own male card edge connector for your printed circuit board (PCB) from scratch. • While far more common in electronics of the 1970s and 80s, these kinds of male connectors are still used even today. Using an electronic design automation (EDA) software like Eagle from Autodesk we can replicate any card edge connector in exacting detail. • • In Eagle the approach is to create a new device consisting of a symbol representing the female connector specifications that the male end plugs into, and then a footprint representing the male connector itself. The symbol and footprint are put together to create a custom device in Eagle that you can place into your schematic. • When you go to fabricate these PCBs, pick a vendor that will do ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) plating on the fingers as that is more resistant to insertion/removal wear. I can recommend OSH Park as a fantastic high quality fab in the USA that does this plating by default. • And if I've saved you some $$ here, consider some coins for the coffee tip-jar! https://ko-fi.com/drshock • Chapters: • 0:00 - Problem overview • 0:52 - Creating custom part • 10:19 - Using the custom part • 10:52 - Board layout • #drshock #pcbdesign • Disclaimer: DrShock, the alias for the human content creator for this YouTube channel, is not responsible for any damages, injuries, losses, or liabilities associated with any repairs, upgrades, or maintenance performed on yours, or any other, product whatsoever.
