Coastal climates often have relatively mild summers and winters and smaller differences in temperature and precipitation between the seasons compared to continental climates. • Coastal climates are usually confined to the region within a few kilometers of the coast and will grade into continental climates or arid desert climates further from the coastline. Although, some coastal climates can stretch for hundreds of kilometers inland. • The warmer winters and cooler summers in coastal climates are the result of the ocean taking longer to warm up during summer and cool down during winter when compared to land masses. • Thick cloud cover and fog is common in some coastal climates. The clouds and fog are the result of water vapor condensing into tiny water droplets when it interacts with the cool ocean temperatures. San Fransisco is the United States is pretty famous for its summer fog. That's probably where it got its nickname 'Fog City'. • I live in an Australian coastal climate called the Gold Coast. When sometimes get fog in the evening or early morning. It smells just like the ocean too! • In winter over here, it's usually about 20 degrees celsius during the day and a bit colder at night. In summer, it gets a bit hotter, but that suits me just fine...cause I love the beach!
