DANNY'S ON FACEBOOK : / danielsgamevault • ------- • Battle City (sometimes called Super Tank ) is an overhead shooter for the NES released by Namco in 1985. You take control of a tank with the objective of destroying all the enemy tanks in each level. The enemy tanks enter the battlefield at the top of the screen and just wander around, firing bullets at random. You beat a level when you eliminate all enemy tanks and the game is over if the player's base is destroyed or you run out of lives after your tank is shot down by an enemy bullet. The game has 35 different stages consisting of different types of terrain and barriers. The brown brick walls can be shot down piece by piece. The white concrete walls can't be destroyed by enemy bullets but the player tank can eventually shoot through these as well if you collect three or more star power-ups. There are also green bushes that can hide tanks under them, icy portions that make it more difficult to stop the the tank and also water which tanks cannot pass through but their bullets can. Shooting a tank which flashes red causes a random powerup to show up somewhere on the playfield in the form of an icon. The tank icon gives you an extra life, the star increases your firepower (collecting one star makes the shots faster, collecting another star allows two simultaneous bullets to be fired and grabbing a third star allows the player to shoot through concrete walls just like the brick ones), the grenade icon destroys all the enemy tanks on the playfield at once, the clock icon freezes them for a short period of time, the shovel icon adds concrete walls around your base for a limited time and the hard-hat icon makes the player's tank invincible for a limited time. There is also a two-player mode where each player controls their own tank. This opens up the possibility of working together to cover as much ground as possible, or compete against each other to see who dies first or gets the highest score. If a player shoots the other one, the tank that just got hit is frozen for a brief moment, though they can still fire. If one player runs out of lives, the game keeps on going, but if the base is destroyed, it's game over for both players. The game also has a basic level designer where you can create and play your own custom playfield, although you can't save it. Battle City is fast paced, entertaining and will surely hold you interest for a while, especially if you play it with a friend - it's really addicting. Final verdict: GREAT game ! (video is rendered at twice the original speed to make it less boring)
