PCB Inspection Methods amp Common PCB Defects

If we consider the PCBA production process, there are inspection methods that should be used throughout the process's different steps. • Solder paste process • Paste stencil alignment (we look for the paste to be aligned with the pads and not to be a mess or touching other solder paste) • Squeegee speed and pressure (check that solder paste is applied correctly and is not left on the stencil) • Pick place machines • Loss of vacuum check • Short or worn nozzle check • Sticking nozzles check • (All of these will affect component placement onto the PCB) • Higher than normal reject rates at inspection • Component and circuit board damage from ESD • Wave solder checks • Bridging (solder touches neighboring solder) • Insufficient solder on top fillet (not enough solder to attach component properly) • Insufficient solder on bottom side fillet (not enough solder to attach component properly) • Solder de-wetting or non-wetting (defective amount of solder left on board) • Solder voids • Solder skips • Icicles flags (horns) • Solder on mask • Rough or disturbed solder • You'll also see some visual examples of some other common defects with components, including: • Lifted components • Tombstone effect • Wrong polarity • Upside down mounting • Missing components • Missing solder • Lifted lead • Billboarding • Shifted/twisted components • If you know the types of defects that can occur when producing PCBAs your quality inspector can anticipate them. If these defects keep occurring, then you know which area of the production process has an issue and can examine it in order to solve the problem. • Overall, the point is to help increase the quality of PCBAs that you receive from your suppliers. • ________________________________________________________________________ • Watch the rest of these PCB-related videos in this playlist: • PCB PCBA Production (Important Fabr... • If you have any questions regarding producing YOUR electronic products that use PCBs, or need help, feel free to contact us over at Sofeast: https://www.sofeast.com/contact-us/ • You may also like to learn more about the materials processes that we're experienced in working with on this page: https://www.sofeast.com/resources/mat... • And also, the products that we are expert in here: https://www.sofeast.com/resources/pro...
