PLCs: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-3873-plcs... • Surge Protection: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-1630-surg... • Branch Supplementary Breakers: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-3669-bran... • UPS: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-1583-upss... • Power Supply: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-1570-powe... • Terminal Blocks: https://www.rspsupply.com/c-1635-term... • Planning - Power Distribution Hardware • ● Review any specs the client may require • ● Make sure you are clear on what the incoming power will be to • the panel • ○ Normally 120VAC, which is what we have in our panel • ○ If it’s more than 120VAC, take proper safety precautions in • the panel • ■ External disconnect • ■ Transformer • ● Know what form of DC power is required • ○ Typically this is 24VDC, but can sometimes vary • ● If it is a solar site, it will normally run on 12VDC • ○ A charge controller and battery system will be required • ● Then Select the main panel breaker • ○ This breaker should be a “Branch Circuit Breaker” • ■ Protects everything downstream of this breaker • ■ UL489 listed • ● Then Select Surge Protection Device • ● Determine what circuit breakers will be needed to distribute • power throughout the panel • ○ These can be supplementary breakers as they are only • meant to protect one device • ○ You can also use fuse blocks instead of circuit breakers • for this step. • ● If you are going to have a UPS back system in the panel, it is a • good idea to add a “Power Fail” relay that will be monitored by • the PLC. • ○ This relay will be connected to the incoming power, and if • power is lost, the PLC will be notified and can alarm • operators of the power loss to the panel • ● How to switch from AC power to DC power? • ● Power supply selection • ○ Make sure the power supply that is selected converts to • the proper DC voltage • ○ Make sure that you select a power supply that can • manage the current you plan to use in your system. • ○ In our case we selected a 24VDC 10A power supply • ● You will also need to select some terminal blocks and • grounding blocks to complete the hardware needed for you • power distribution hardware. • ● Important to remember to use properly sized wire that can • accommodate the amount of current that will be running • through your system.
