Gravina in Puglia is a town located about 40 km from Bari, on the border between Basilicata and Puglia. It is the seat of the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, an area characterised by numerous gravina or canyons, some of which are a hundred metres deep. Further south and down to the sea through the Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana, there are similar towns, perched and sometimes literally cut in two by canyons: Matera, Ginosa, Castellanota, Laterza are good examples.
