In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about a CEPHALOHEMATOMA. • A Cephalohematoma is a typically harmless condition that causes blood to pool under a newborn’s scalp after a difficult vaginal delivery and results in a swelling on the infants head. Pressure during childbirth, including the use of vacuum extractors, can break blood vessels in the scalp. It rarely requires treatment, but it may increase the risk of jaundice, anemia and infections. • Timeline: • 00:00 - Introduction • 00:30 - What is a cephalohematoma? • 01:13 - How common is it? • 01:56 - Examples (with photos) • 02:35 - Does it need treatment? • 02:46 - Possible complications • Key information: • What is it? • Cephalohematoma is where blood collects between a newborn’s scalp and skull. • So just how common is it? • Well from the data that is available it’s thought that cephalohematomas occur in about 2.5% of prolonged, difficult vaginal deliveries. • If the lady has an assisted delivery that needs vacuum extraction or forceps, this raises the risk to about 1 baby in 10 delivered this way. • What are risk factors for developing a cephalohematoma? • An assisted delivery using vacuum extraction or forceps • Epidural pain relief during childbirth • Having a long labour • Having a Larger-than-average baby (fetal macrosomia) weighing more than 8 pounds 13 ounces • Multiple babies – so twins, triplets or more. • Does it need treatment? • The most common answer to this is is no and that’s because it is often harmless. The bruising or blood buildup should go away without treatment in a couple of weeks or months. • Further information: • Cleveland Clinic information on cephaloheamatoma: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health... • NIH Stat Pearls information: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NB... • ---------- • #doctor #cephalohematoma #baby #health #medical #infant #newborn • Information accurate as of 10th April 2023. • ************************************************************************ • Connect through: • YouTube: / doctorodonovan • TikTok: @doctorodonovan • ************************************************************************** • Disclaimer: • The video is intended as an educational resource only.
