http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com • What technology! The Nilometer is a unique historical site once used to measure Nile River flood levels. Built in 861 A.D., it is mostly original except for the roof. • • A column in the center is divided into marks showing 19 cubits (a cubit is slightly more than half a meter). An ideal flood filled the Nilometer up to the 16th mark; less than that could mean drought and famine. Such structures could once be seen along the length of the Nile and were useful until the modern era when dams were built. Boggles my mind how people come up with something like this!
