The FRAPPÉ research campaign addresses summertime air quality, specifically the role of ground level ozone. But what is ground-level ozone? Is it natural, human-made, or both, and how does it differ from ozone found higher in the atmosphere? • FRAPPÉ -- the Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiement -- will involve a series of flights and ground-based measurements that determine the factors controlling surface ozone in the Colorado front range. It will also address if current emission controls are sufficient to reduce ozone levels below the National Ambient Air Quality Standards? • FRAPPÉ will be closely linked to an campaign taking place in the Front Range at the same time -- NASA DISCOVER-AQ (DAQ) aimed at improving satellite capability to interpret air quality (AQ) conditions near the earth's surface. Together, FRAPPÉ and Discover AQ provide an outstanding opportunity to study and characterize local air quality at a level of detail not possible previously. • Additional support will include the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), NOAA Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), The University of Colorado Institute of Alpine and Arctic Research (INSTAAR), Colorado State University and other universities, the National Park Service, and other local groups and agencies. • Additional educational resources can be found on: • UCARConnect.ucar.edu and • UCARConnect.ucar.edu/education/features • Follow the research in summer 2014 at the campaign's website: • www.eol.ucar.edu/field_projects/frappe • www.eol.ucar.edu/frappe/eo • Learn more about this video: https://ucarconnect.ucar.edu/multimed... • Explore more online: https://ucarconnect.ucar.edu
