It’s certainly been long-awaited in South Africa, Opel’s latest Corsa. As the old saying goes “The best things in life are worth the wait,” I believe that Opel has done an amazing job of pulling off this recent entrant to motoring’s B-Segment. • The Style • With sharp and angular lines, this latest-generation Corsa looks purposeful while still maintaining an understated elegance. It’s minimalistic in its approach to both exterior styling and interior make-up. • Bringing things into the 21st century is the Corsa’s new digital dashboard which is clear and precise. This is also coupled with the vehicle’s central touchscreen-based multimedia display which features Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto abilities but to name a few of its media choices. The result is a world of online streaming content capabilities and an overall easy to utilise and understand media interface. • The Drive • The Corsa shares its underpinnings with Peugeot’s 208. When I say its underpinnings, what I mean to say is its entire DNA. From the chassis to the drivetrain to the entire, it’s all 208, and that is not exactly a bad thing! • There are 2 engines available now, a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol, which produces 55 kW and 118 Nm of torque and a 1.2-litre turbopetrol with 96 kW and 230 Nm. I drove the latter of the two, and all I can say is wow! Derived from the 2014 Peugeot 308 essentially, this motor has been a multiple Engine of the Year winner in its category, and its easy to see why it was the choice within this vehicle. The drive says it all. • This vehicle is light, its lightest spec weighs just 980 kg, and this can be felt when it comes to fuel consumption, acceleration and overtaking scenarios. In motoring, weight is huge, and Opel has gotten this one very right. • On The Safety Front • The Corsa comes standard with an array of safety elements including electronic stability control, 6 airbags, ABS and EBD as standard. The 1.2T Elegance derivative adds a driver-drowsiness alert function, collision-mitigating braking at low speeds, lane-keep assist and front passenger detection system as well. ISOfix mounting points in the rear for child seats are also present, making this newcomer meet all the required safety elements which we so often look out for. • SA Pricing Conclusion • The Opel Corsa 1.2T Elegance retails for R386 900 (R4200 p/m on finance currently). It is sold with a 3-year/120 000 km warranty and a 3-year/45 000 km service plan. • Though the B-Segment of motoring is a fiercely contested space with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai I20 and Honda’s new FIT, for instance, it is always enjoyable to spend time behind the wheel of a vehicle that brings its own unique subtle charm and elegance to the party and does it by shocking in a good way within so many of its attributes.
