There are five declensions (or groups) of nouns in Latin. In past lessons we have looked at first and second declension Latin nouns. This lesson introduces third declension nouns in Latin. This lesson also revises the main characteristics of first and second declension nouns, as well as exploring third declension nouns. • Third declension Latin nouns are identified by the -is singular endings. Third declension nouns have two sets of endings: one for masculine and feminine nouns, and another for neuter nouns. There are also some irregular third declension neuter nouns, and a special group called the i-stem nouns. Third declension nouns are quite tricky, but this is as hard as it will get when it comes to noun declensions. If you understand 3rd declension nouns, 4th and 5th declension nouns will be no problem. • Apologies, I misspoke at 1:13 and said first declension nouns, when I really meant to say that it is second declension nouns, which are either masculine or neuter in gender. I also see that the nominative, genitive and dative pronunciations for turris have been cut out.
