Planted heavily with a healthy level of beneficial bacteria will get you off to a great start. Start with clean water and keep the parameters similar to most fish tanks. These Detritus Worms are not harmful and they are not parasitic. Detritus Worms are a great option for live fish foods for fry and smaller fish. These worms have no ability to protect themselves, they swim slowly and they are high in protein. • Can Detritus Worms Harm Humans? • Nope. These tiny white worms are not harmful to humans. They are not parasitic and they cannot bite or otherwise hurt a human being. That being said, you should still wash your hands after handling the detritus worms or equipment from the live culture. You should always wash hands after dealing with any aquarium equipment. • How to Get Rid of Detritus Worms? • To remove detritus worms from your aquarium you should: 1 remove their food sources. Vacuum the substrate and reduce feeding schedule for your fish. 2 install a fine mesh filter rinse the filter pads regularly with aquarium water. Over time you will greatly diminish the number of worms in the aquarium. • Where do Detritus Worms Come From? • Typically these tiny white detritus worms will find their way into your aquarium as hitchhikers. Coming in with live plants, used decorations and other items bought from pet shops or purchased online. They actively swim up and down through the aquarium in search of food and oxygen. Yet they are slow swimmers and they lack the ability to swim against strong currents. • What Eats Detritus Worms? • Typically any smaller fish will happily hunt and eat Detritus Worms. Guppies, Platys, Mosquito Fish are great examples. These tiny white worms also make a great live food for fish fry. They offer no resistance and they swim too slowly to escape from predators. • • Are Detritus Worms Harmful to Other Pets Like Shrimp, Turtles, Crayfish etc? • Nope, These tiny white Detritus Worms are harmless to pets like Shrimp, Turtles and Crayfish. Generally these worms will act as a good food source for your pets. They pose no danger to larger animals, other than causing obesity if eaten in exceptionally large numbers. • Can Detritus Worms Live Out of Water? • No these tiny white worms cannot survive for more than a few seconds out of the water. Their incredibly small bodies can dry out very quickly.
