The Saturation Index factors in pH, Alkalinity (the water's resistance to pH change), Temperature, Total Dissolved Solids and Calcium Hardness to give us a true answer to weather water will be corrosive or scaling. Believe it or not but you CAN have water with a high pH that will actually dissolve your pool surface under the right conditions. While your pool water chemistry may fall within acceptable ranges for each individual parameter, your pool water may not be truly balanced. The only way to know for sure is to calculate the Saturation Index. While there are several ways to do this, the most accepted method is the Langlier Saturation Index equation. So whatever you do, DON'T fill your pool with fresh mountain water!!
