0:00 Magnificat • 2:28 Nunc dimittis • This setting of the usual evening canticles is by Charles Steggall (1826-1905) who was an English composer and hymnodist. He was also the editor of the first English edition of the Bach motets. Simple and succinct, these canticles retain many of the features of older works including the separation of the choir into decani and cantoris (the two sides of the aisle in an English chapel or cathedral) and the use of three soloists to form a verse section in each. The harmonies, though, are more Romantic. These were composed as part of a complete set comprising Morning, Communion, and Evening services: Te Deum, Benedictus, Jubilate, the Mass movements including a Sursum Corda and Gloria and Laus Tibi, and the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, all of which were dedicated to his friend the Rev. Sir F.A. Gore Ouseley, Bart., M.A., Mus.D. just in case you wanted Ouseley's entire curriculum vitae and not just his name!
