The old historic and sometimes haunted ghost towns of the west are popular Halloween destinations. Some of the spooky ghost towns lie in a decomposing state way out in the middle of nowhere and a late night paranormal rendezvous is guaranteed to send shivers up the spine. Exploring a ghostly haunt where tragic events took place and evil supposedly exists may appeal to some, while others will prefer a more light hearted fun filled good time on Halloween. There are ghost towns out west that have been rekindled as primary tourist attractions, complete with restaurants, artisan shops and carnival style attractions. These kinds of ghost towns usually go all out with Halloween decor and the experience compares to a theme park. One such example is Calico Ghost Town, which definitely is a family friendly destination. • Calico is an 1890s ghost town that was rekindled by Walter Knott in the 1950s. If the name sounds familiar, the famous Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in southern California should ring a bell. Calico was the inspiration for some of the amusement park rides and the original ghost town near Barstow was for the most part restored to its former glory. The shops, restaurants and entertainment compares to Knott's Berry Farm, so this abandoned old west mining camp definitely is a family friendly destination. Calico is a historic Mojave Desert mining camp like no other and this old ghost town certainly does go full tilt spooky during the month of October! • For those who dream of living in a classic old Hollywood western movie, there actually is a place to make this wish happen in southern California. Pioneertown is the spot on the map to look for since this destination was originally designed as a Hollywood western movie set in the mid 1940s. All of the buildings look like they came straight out of the late 1800s and the main street area businesses are exactly the same as what is seen in the classic western films. • Pioneertown features a blacksmith shop, livery and mercantile. This village is also a haven for artisans, so an art gallery, potter and even an old fashioned soap maker have shops on main street. It simply would not be an authentic wild west town without a saloon or brothel and Pioneertown also offers these sin filled retreats. The sidewalks are wood planks, main street is dirt and horses have the right of way, so the dream of living in a classic Hollywood western can indeed be real in good old Pioneertown. • Pioneertown does have an eventful past and many famous western movies were filmed in this place. The film museum is the best place to experience the golden years, while traditional live entertainment still takes place in this modern age. Staged bank robberies and gunfights happen all day long, while spectators are encouraged to take part in the action. The outdoor theater hosts all sorts of fun events on weekends, so it pays to look at the schedule when planning the trip. Family fun activities include gold panning and horseback riding, while plenty of old west lifestyle shopping awaits. There are restaurants to get a belly full of hearty grub and the motels offer a chance to fulfill the wild west dream. For all these reasons, Pioneertown needs to be placed high on the bucket list! • 00:00 Title • 00:15 Calico Ghost Town • 06:50 Pioneertown • 11:29 Fin
