http://mdc.mo.gov/ • The haunting howl of a coyote fills the crisp winter air and it’s hard to keep from shuddering. The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to help you to discover nature and learn more about coyote. • Similar in looks to a German Shepard dog, the Latin name for coyote means barking dog. • Contrary to popular belief, coyotes do not howl at the moon. • Instead, they howl to communicate with other coyotes. • Coyotes prefer open country rather than dense forest. • And while they can often be spotted in these areas, you have to know when to look. • Coyotes are not truly nocturnal animals. • They are what we consider crepuscular animals meaning that they will come out at dusk and at dawn. • Then they will lay up during the off hours, during the middle of the day and during the middle of the night. • The coyote is Missouri’s fastest mammal. • It can run 43 miles per hour. • Rabbits and mice make up almost two-thirds of the coyote diet, with other animal foods and plants such as persimmons making up the rest.
