Renowned BBC wildlife presenter and penguin-lover, Michaela Strachan, has issued a public video appeal to help build a new penguin hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), a non-profit seabird organisation, has started construction of its new seabird hospital but urgently need additional funds to complete the building. • Now resident in Cape Town, Strachan volunteered at SANCCOB in 2013 whilst filming The Great Penguin Rescue, a popular 6-part series that saw Strachan help to rescue, rehabilitate and release endangered African penguin chicks. Since the series, she has been a passionate ambassador for SANCCOB and its vital seabird conservation work. • SANCCOB has embarked on an ambitious project to rebuild its seabird centre this year which is in desperate need of some rehabilitation of its own. Strachan is urging the public to help make SANCCOB’s dream of building a new seabird centre a reality by sponsoring a brick. • Go to https://sanccob.co.za/donate-brick.php and donate a brick for just £3 (or $5/€4/R50). • The new seabird hospital will ensure that every seabird patient receives expert care and will include, among other things: two new Intensive Care Units; a three-part wash bay area to wash, rinse and dry oiled birds; a classroom for the centre’s growing educational outreach; a surgery; an X-ray room; pens; preparation areas; an aviary; three new pools; and a laboratory. • Whilst approximately two thirds of the total funds needed have been secured, SANCCOB still requires £260 000/R4,5 million/$340 000 to complete the new building. Help us build a better future for the endangered African penguin and other seabirds by donating a brick today at https://sanccob.co.za/donate-brick.php
