#tribute • Theodore DeReese Teddy Pendergrass was an American R B/soul singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was born on March 26, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the city's Germantown neighborhood. • Pendergrass started his music career in the early 1970s as the lead singer of the group Harold Melvin the Blue Notes, with whom he had a string of hits including If You Don't Know Me by Now and The Love I Lost . In 1977, he left the group to pursue a solo career and released his debut solo album, Teddy Pendergrass, which included the hit single I Don't Love You Anymore . • Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Pendergrass was one of the most successful R B artists, with hits such as Close the Door , Love T.K.O. , and Turn Off the Lights . He was known for his powerful and soulful voice, as well as his ability to convey deep emotion through his music. • In 1982, Pendergrass was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He continued to make music, and his 1984 album, Love Language, was a critical success. Pendergrass remained active in the music industry until his death on January 13, 2010, at the age of 59. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame in 1996 and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
