Dr Andrew Jordan explains what Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquin) is. It is used frequently in Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It is taken daily. It takes two to three months for full effect. It is a long term medication and it is used to modulate the immune system. Infection risk is minimal. It is regarded one of the safer medications in rheumatology. Side effects can be headache, abdominal upset or a skin rash. Long term, Plaquenil can cause issues with the eyes but this occurs only with long term use (over 10 years). This is also rare but your rheumatologist may send you for eye checks. Overall, it is a very useful medication especially in Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. • As always, please speak to your treating doctor if you have any questions about management or medications you take. • ★↓FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA!↓★ • Facebook Show Page: / bjchealth.connectedcare
