A fossil crocodilian tooth of the giant alligator, Deinosuchus rugosus from the Upper Cretaceous aged Black Creek Group in Phoebus Landing, Bladen County, North Carolina, United States. The species, D. rugosus may be considered a dubious taxon due to the holotype being represented by teeth. These specimens may represent Deinosuchus schwimmeri, but the species is not officially described from the Black Creek Group. The tooth still retains some of the thick wrinkled enamel where the name rugosus comes from. Deinosuchus was one of the largest crocodylomorphs to ever exist alongside Sarcosuchus and Purussaurus. Deinosuchus has commonly been portrayed as being contemporaries with Tyrannosaurus rex, however, this massive gator lived much earlier and was already extinct for a couple million years by the time T. rex evolved. • #deinosuchus #fossil #alligator #paleontology #fossilfriday
