Often, Boden’s mate occurs when the mated king has castled queenside. In those cases, the mate is almost always preceded by a queen- or rook sacrifice that opens up the diagonal on which a bishop delivers checkmate. • In Boden's mate, two bishops along two intersecting diagonals deliver checkmate, with possible escape squares occupied by friendly pieces, or covered by e.g. a queen or rook of the opponent. In some cases, one of the bishops is replaced by a queen, who gives a diagonal check or controls squares diagonally. • The mate has its name from the British chess player Samuel Boden (1826-1882) . However, it had been known previously from the game Horwitz–Popert, Hamburg 1844. • 0:00 Boden's mate 1 • 0:31 Position 1 : Edward Lasker vs. Fritz Englund (1913) • 0:57 Position 2 : Esteban Canal vs. NN (1934) • 1:20 Position 3 : R.
