In the French department of Mayenne – one of the regions most affected by land consolidation – farmers are working to restore the historic hedgerows that once criss-crossed the countryside. They’re doing this as part of the ambitious LIFE Revers’Eau Chéran project, funded by the European Commission, which aims to revitalise the bocage landscapes typical of north-western France and return straightened waterways to their natural courses. • What’s the ideal design for a hedge that benefits both farmers and the environment? • Do hedgerows represent an added cost for farmers, or are they a potential source of income? • What does a restored river landscape look like after ten years? • And how do restoration efforts influence the water cycle and flood risks? • To find out, I met with farmers, technicians, and engineers who are working on the ground under the coordination of the Oudon Water Board. Justin Rooks and Camille Sabin welcomed me to their farms and gave me an inside look at their agroforestry systems—how do they integrate livestock, trees, and crops into a cohesive whole? • Don’t want to miss an episode?
