Puff adders are the ultimate ambush predators according to the University of Witwatersrand, hard to see, hard to hear and hard to smell. Recent research from the Wits School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences found that they are the first known terrestrial animal we know of that uses chemical crypsis to survive. • In other words, they can disguise how they smell. • How do we know this? Dogs and meerkats from the Monte Casino Bird Gardens. • “We asked the meerkats and dogs to scent-match scent samples collected from puff adders and other snake species. The scents of most snakes were easily identified by the dogs and meerkats, but they failed dismally when it came to puff adder scent,” said Wits post-graduate student and research lead Ashadee Kay Miller.
