New japan pro wrestling’s most important event of the year outside wrestle kingdom is about to start: the G1 Climax. • If you’re not totally sure what the G1 one is and how it works, let me explain. • In short, it's an annual tournament held by new japan since 1991 – although its lineage under different names goes back much farther. Much history has been made and many careers have taken off at the G1, from Masahiro Chono back in 91, to Kenny Omega in 2016, • It operates on a round-robin system where wrestlers are sorted into different blocks and compete against each other within those groups. This year there’s four blocks, and the block winners will compete against each other in semi-finals. The two winners of the semifinals will face eachother in an actual final. And the winner will get a contract for an IWGP world championship title shot at Wrestle Kingdom in the Tokyo dome. • #wrestling #wwe #g1climax
