My brother is stuck in his salty sea fishing ways but reluctantly agrees to join me on the River Frome to “watch” some fly fishing. Can I make him fish!? • My brother Will has fished with me since childhood. Crabbing grockles to rock pool specialists. Peddle pushing and bussing to suburban village ponds; trains to trot rivers for chub in the country, or into the capital city to leger prawns for reservoir rainbows. Then the freedom of cars to venture out, stay out, and catch 'proper' carp. We moved west in adulthood and embraced beach fishing, but our paths began to split. My interest in lure, fly and kayak grew stronger, while Will became increasingly obsessed by big bass. He's done a fair bit of fly fishing on and off over the years, but over the last decade he has barely touched a fly rod. The same can be said of me regarding my beach casters. We still fish together - mostly on rivers over winter, but your fishing buzz is like your favourite music. You can't help but want others to love it as much as you do. So...I dragged him along to my fly fishing club last week in the hope that it might reignite an old flame (that I wasn't entirely sure was there). He didn't want to touch a fly rod and he definitely didn't want a mic or camera pointing at him. This time though, I give him little choice.
