Great spotted woodpeckers are hunted by woodland birds of prey such as the sparrowhawk, but far more commonplace is the sight seen in the video of a waiting Magpie. As soon as the parent birds are away from the nest, there's a chance a chick close to fledging will have a peep out of the nest hole, presenting it's red-capped head to any predator, just waiting for that exact moment to strike. • Now a Sparrowhawk may be more successful with its aerial agility and speed, but corvids such as the Magpie or Crow are more likely to sit very close to the nest, unless the Woodpeckers annoy it with alarm calls and pecking hard on bits of bark and such, above the predator, effectively dropping bits of bark onto and around the predator. • On this occasion, the Magpie has had enough of the noisy parent birds and flies off, allowing feeding to continue, whilst the other parent bird remains vigilant and still sounding the alarm. • If you enjoyed this video would you kindly click the 👍 Like 👍 button. • #wildlifephotography #woodpeckers #wildlife
