Custom Builtin Desk Home Office Work Space

We dedicate some time to an often overlooked work space - the home office. My home office build will consist of a large desk and table for 3D printers. The work surfaces will be finished in a dark wood stain utilizing the burnt wood finishing technique. We also utilize Ikea Alex drawer cabinets for storage. • We start by using some laminated project panels which were purchased from Lowes. Each panel is 16 wide, 96 long, and 3/4 thick. The panels are pre-laminated pine boards which are also planed and sanded. This outer surface is then attached to an MDF sheet which significantly increases stiffness and strength. The end panels of each desk is made of MDF and pine boards with a decorative X-pattern in the side. These side panels as well as modified 2x4 ledgers support the desk surface and allow it to float. The desk itself utilizes two small Alex drawer units while the table has some larger, rolling, Alex units underneath. The table was finished with Minwax espresso stain (2 coats) and Polycrylic (3 coats). • I will say that I spent some time deliberating on the exact height of my desk based on my personal height. I wanted to design the desk for maximum ergonomic benefit since I will be working from home. I am 5' 11 and based on that information I calculated that my ideal desk height would be ~29 . There are online calculators to help you figure out your optimum height if you are going to building your own desk. • I really like how these desks turned out and they are proving to be extremely functional. I now have plenty of space for 3D printers and electronics projects which would otherwise not be suited in my garage shop. • Whether you have an expansive shop or are restricted to an indoor workspace - there is something in this video for everyone!
