People threw firecrackers at a man standing on a chariot, dressed as the deity Lord Handan, during a demonstration of this popular folk tradition in Taitung County on Saturday. • The Bombarding Lord Handan ritual was the first of over 30 similar ceremonies planned by the Taitung County government as part of its celebrations for the annual Lantern Festival, which falls on Feb. 12 this year. • In local folk beliefs, Lord Handan serves as a guardian of the celestial treasury. It is said that the deity fears the cold, so his devotees throw firecrackers at him to keep him warm during his annual procession. The more firecrackers participants throw, the greater the good fortune they are believed to receive. • About Focus Taiwan (CNA English News) • Website:https://focustaiwan.tw/ • X:https://x.com/Focus_Taiwan/ • Facebook: / focus.tw • Instagram: / focus_taiwan • Global Edition • 中央通訊社:https://www.cna.com.tw/ • フォーカス台湾:https://japan.focustaiwan.tw/ • Fokus Taiwan: https://indonesia.focustaiwan.tw/
