But most of all, with his unshaken determination he rallied the British People and prepared the Nation for resistance: If we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour. • This was their finest hour was the last of three major speeches given around the period of the Battle of France (the others two being Blood, toil, tears, and sweat speech of 13 May, and We shall fight on the beaches speech of 4 June). Events developed dramatically over the five-week period, and although broadly similar in themes, each speech addressed a different military and diplomatic context.
