Parallel Session 52, Morphology and configuration processing • Jingyao Zhang and Makoto Ohsaki (Kyoto University) present their work on design tools. • Developable surfaces are important in many architectural applications, due to their low construction costs and globally curved shapes. In this study, we present an efficient design tool for discrete developable surfaces, using surface Ricci flow. The metric induces the user-defined Gaussian curvature function on the surface, and the metric is conformal (i.e., angle preserving) to the metric of the original surface. The great advantage of Ricci flow is that it converges exponentially to the specified Gaussian curvature. Following the general procedure for discrete Ricci flow, the target Gaussian curvatures are set to zero at all interior vertices for generating a developable surface. Moreover, for the design case with fixed boundary (vertices), an optimization problem is presented to find the geometry with zero Gaussian curvatures at the interior vertices. Conformal transformation of the surface can effectively avoid irregular triangulation in the final geometry. • Watch their presentation on An efficient method for design of discrete developable surfaces by Ricci flow from the Spatial Structures 2020/21 Conference. • #IASS #IASS2020_21 #SpatialStructures #Architecture #Structures #Engineering #LightweightStructures #CivilEngineering #StructuralEngineering #Conference #Construction #computationaldesign #nextgeneration #parallelsessions #morphology #configuration #surface #gauss #flow #design #metric #developablesurface
