Flight to the Geographic Center of the United States with Jim 20241101

On this flight with Jim I set out to try to find the Geographic Center of the United States, which is some twenty miles North of Belle Fourche, SD. On the way out I wanted to have a look at a few other things, the Infinity Landing airport, an area SouthEast of Tilford, record Bear Butte again (never boring), Spearfish, Belle Fourche, the Geographic Center of the United States, and then before turning back home I made a quick swing to MT and WY, because I was very close to that tri-state corner . I am always useful for useless stuff, so getting a few seconds of MT and WI was in my plan. The evening before an Army Chopper was circling something SouthEast of Tilford. I turn and saw an empty field and a plateau. I turn East to cross over both of them, then head N towards Bear Butte • 0:20:34 Bear Butte, the top is at 4426 ft., so I crossed it at 5000 ft. as I have to stay at least 500 ft. above any man-made structures (FAR 91.119), and Bear Butte has some installation at the top. And I verified with my GPS that my altitude over ground was at least 500 ft. when directly over it • 0:26:05 the highway again • 0:30:51 Spearfish airport • 0:37:02 Belle Fourche (town) • 0:39:51 Belle Fourche (airport) • 0:46:46 I try to hit the pond with my shadow, I missed it by maybe 15 ft. • 0:47:38 the actual Geographic Center of the United States coming in. This looks a tad depressing from the air. On the opposite side of the farm you see a narrow path leading SouthEast from the road, then there come two spots that look like meteor impacts. The center is the first one, coming from the road • 0:47:42 the actual Geographic Center of the United States. It's the small white spot at the bottom of the image • 0:55:56 I am now in MT, turning S to fly to WY, then back to Bear Butte. One wide gentle nonstop turn. I let Jim fly us to Bear Butte • 1:05:42 Belle Fourche Reservoir • 1:17:02 Bear Butte again • 1:18:22 I turn NE to get to YUNGS intersection to start the TACAN-A approach to Ellsworth Airbase as a practice approach • 1:22:15 over YUNGS, turning right to start the holding pattern • 1:24:33 turn inbound • 1:25:37 re-intercept the 326 degree radial of the RAP VOR, tracking 146, wings level, track inbound • 1:33:12 Ellsworth Airbase • 1:33:44 ten B1 bombers saying hello to us • 1:33:58 near the top, on the right side, you see the RCA VOR • 1:34:38 the highway again
