What is Eurocentrism? What is Afrocentrism? Are they similar? Is one merely a response to another? • Definition of Eurocentric: focusing on European culture or history to the exclusion of a wider view of the world; implicitly regarding European culture as preeminent. Eurocentrism (also Eurocentricity or Western-centrism) is a worldview that is centered on Western civilization or a biased view that favors it over non-western civilizations. The exact scope of centrism varies from the entire Western world to just the continent of Europe or even more narrowly, to Western Europe (especially during the Cold War). When the term is applied to history, it may be used in reference to an apologetic stance towards European colonialism and other forms of imperialism. • Definition of Afrocentrism: Afrocentrism, also called Africentrism, cultural and political movement whose mainly African American adherents regard themselves and all other Blacks as syncretic Africans and believe that their worldview should positively reflect traditional African values. • How have these isms affected scholarship involving historical studies? • How do scholars combat personal bias and projection when they study ancient texts? • • Check out our new store! https://teespring.com/stores/the-hist... • Get your SEA PEOPLES Mediterranean Tour Shirt Today! • https://teespring.com/sea-peoples-med... • Hittite Coffee Mug: https://teespring.com/HittiteEmpireMug • Doctor Rebecca Futo Kennedy is Associate Professor of Classics, Women's and Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies at Denison University; and the Director of the Denison Museum.
