Rain is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. The Demi-God son of the God Argus and half-brother to the Demi-Gods Taven and Daegon, Rain is a treacherous Edenian Prince wishing to claim the Outworld throne while seeking revenge against his father for the death of his mother. • Rain made his debut in the original Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as a gag character before gaining an expanded backstory and being playable in the game's home console versions, becoming a recurring character in the series. He later returned as one of the many playable characters in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Rain would appear in Mortal Kombat (2011) as the third playable character through DLC as part of the Season Pass. • Rain appeared in Mortal Kombat X as a non-playable fightable character while also serving as a minor antagonist in the game's Story Mode. He returned again in Mortal Kombat 11 as a playable character through DLC as part of the Kombat Pack 2, becoming the first character in Mortal Kombat history to appear in more than one game as a downloadable character. • A new version of Rain returns in Mortal Kombat 1, serving as an antagonist in the game's Story Mode. • Rain was originally meant to appear in Mortal Kombat 3, but didn't actually appear until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Rain was originally a red herring inserted by the game developers; a character shown in the game's attract mode who did not actually exist within the game itself. A recent interview reveals that the insert was made by Ed Boon himself to intentionally trick players. Many MK fans searched for him in vain, with the eventual realization of his status as a joke character (named after a Prince song, Purple Rain due to Boon himself being a longtime fan of the musician) dawning. The joke expands further when it is revealed that Rain is a prince himself. He would, however, soon make an actual appearance in the console versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy as a full-fledged character with his own history (that of a traitor to his realm) and move set, to the delight of many fans and the chagrin of others. • In the old timelines, Rain was a demigod - the son of Amara conceived by Argus.
