Could FGM form the basis of an Asylum Claim? is the focus of part 3 of the series Too Much Pain -- The Voices of Refugee Women on female genital mutilation (FGM) and asylum, produced by the UN Refugee Agency (http://www.UNHCR.org). • In this part, the refugee women explain through their personal stories the Convention grounds underpinning the reasons why they had to flee. FGM asylum claims may be for reason of membership of a particular social group, political opinion, and/or religion. Refugee and asylum-seeking mothers also explain why they seek international protection to protect their daughters from this form of torture. FGM is a child-specific form of persecution. Even if girls cannot or do not express fear, the fear can still be well-founded. • The 6-part video series Too Much Pain -- The Voices of Refugee Women tells the stories of refugee women who have undergone FGM and are engaged to end this practice.
