We found out later after removing the speaker from the box that this one was a 2 ohm dual voice coil. It was improperly wired and that was the way we got it. The two VC's were wired in parallel. This explains why the same amp and the same speaker wired in series with another speaker worked fine in another setup I was using (in the boat we had just sold). Actually the same amp would go into protect mode on the previous setup. But that is another story for another day.
