Late at night on the 7th April 1998, waves of security men, some in balaclavas, accompanied by dogs, moved onto the Australian waterfront. Australia's largest employer of stevedores, Patrick, with the secret support of the Howard government, was acting to deunionise its workforce.The late-night blanket sackings stunned the nation and propelled the country into a dramatic, divisive confrontation that ultimately would change the workforce forever. Months earlier the Dubai operation – a replacement workforce training scheme involving significant taxpayer funds – was blown open when whistle-blowers revealed the plan to union leaders.
