Things to remember when teaching your dog recall: • 1) A dog with pent up energy will not be successful at recall. • 2) Exercise and a well-balanced, obedient dog are critical factors to successful recall. • 3) Practice as much as possible, consistently, every single day. Give your dog a routine, as much as possible! They thrive off a good routine! This includes daily exercise and mental stimulation for most dogs. • 4) Not all dogs are the same. Some dogs just will not do well with off-leash decision making consistently enough to really feel like they are safe being given that freedom. Make smart decisions, so your dog is not put in situations where they must make correct decisions they are not ready or able to make. • 5) Show them the correct behavior as much as possible. A bunch of “No’s” do not teach a dog the desired behavior.
