The mitral valve, also known as the left atrioventricular valve, or bicuspid valve, connects the left atrium with and the left ventricle. • The mitral valve opens during diastole to allow the blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle. During ventricular systole, the mitral valve is closed which prevents backflow to the left atrium. • The anterior and posterior cusps, or leaflets, are prevented from prolapsing into the left atrium by stringlike structures known as the chordae tendineae. These are inelastic tendons attached at one end to papillary muscles in the left ventricle, and at the other close to the free edges of the cusps.
