KCPQ first launched in 1953 as KMO-TV and was briefly an NBC affiliate before the launch of KOMO-TV. In 1954, the station became an independent station and adopted the call sign KTVW. The station was run cheaply, but still included local programming. Most of these programs were cancelled in 1970 due to financial difficulties and the station was sold to another owner in 1972. • The new ownership attempted to turn things around with innovative, new programming including a talk show, but failed to attract new advertisers.. Over the next few years, several buyers attempted to buy the station, but the deals fell apart and the station was went dark in 1974. • Eventually KTVW was sold to the Clover Park School District in 1976, and the station relaunched with a PBS affiliation and a new call sign, KCPQ (standing for Clover Park Quality). However, faced with financial difficulties, the station was put up for sale again. KCPQ was to be sold to Kelly Broadcasting, who also owned KCRA Sacramento, California. • The station briefly went off the air, and moved their transmitter to Gold Mountain west of Seattle. KCPQ relaunched in November 1980 as an independent station and adopted the iconic Q13 brand, which was used until 2021. The station put heavy emphasis on movies and rating quickly rose. KCPQ also had a small news operation, which initially featured only news updates and aired full newscasts in 1986, but were cancelled the same year. Also in 1986, KCPQ affiliated with the upstart Fox network. • In 1997, Kelly Broadcasting sold KCPQ to Meredith Corporation, who immediately sold the station to Tribune Broadcasting in 1998. In January 1998, the station relaunched its own in-house news operation with a 10 PM newscast. KCPQ would eventually launch a morning newscast in 2000. They would later launch a 9 PM newscast in 2008 and followed by 4, 5 and 8 PM newscasts in the 2010s. KCPQ currently leads at 10 PM and does well in the mornings. • For many years, Fox has coveted the station and has made numerous attempts to buy the station or buy other stations in the market and gain the Fox affiliation from KCPQ. Notable attempts include attempting to buy KIRO in 1997 and KBCB, a rimshot station which covered Vancouver, BC rather than the Seattle metro area in 2014. During Tribune's attempted sale to Sinclair, KCPQ was one of the stations to be divested to Fox. The deal fell apart and Tribune was sold to Nextar, and the station was quickly resold to Fox in 2020. To bring the station in line with other FOX O O stations, the station dropped the Q13 brand in September 2021, and adopted the generic Fox 13 brand. • The clips are from 1981 and onward.
