Intraocular pressure is the pressure within the anterior chambers of the eye. This pressure is maintained by the acqueous humor and is required for keeping the eyes inflated and supporting the lens. • The acqueous humor is produced and secreted by the ciliary bodies into the posterior chamber. The acqueous humor provides support to the lens, bathes it and also provides nutrition to the parts like cornea, trabecular meshwork, anterior viterous which does not recieve any blood supply. Without IOP the patient will have vision loss and problems with the vision. • The intraocular pressure is normally between 10-21 mmHg. When it is less than 5 mmHg the person is said tk have occular hypotony. This can cause vision loss, accelerated cataract, corneal decompensation etc. Than there is an increase in this pressure called as the occular hypertension or glaucoma. glaucoma is a term used to indicate when the rise in intraocular pressure causes damage to the optic nerve. This damage cause permanent and irreversible damage to the nerve. Optic nerve is the nerve that receives all the visual information from the eye to transmit it to the brain for interpretation. When the nerve is damaged this transmission fails and patient slowly turns blind • The intraocular pressure is clinically determined by an ocular tonometry while it can theoratically be determined by the Goldmann equation. It states that • intraocular pressure = F/C + P where • F= aqueos humor flow rate • C= aqueous humour outflow and • P= Episcleral venous pressure • The acqueous humor pathway • The aqueous humor is secreted into the posterior chamber by the ciliary body. The posterior chamber lies between the lens and the iris. from here the aqueous humor enters into the anterior chamber via a small opening in the pupil. The humor circulates in this chamber and than passes through the trabecular meshwork into the Sclemm canal. The trabecular meshwork lies at the iridocorneal junction and is important as in glaucoma, it determines the type of glaucoma, wherein the angle may be closed or open. After entering the Sclemm canal the aqueous flows into the Episcleral vein for drainage. • Link to our other recommended videos are • • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease// GER... - GERD • • Encephalocele//Neural Tube defect//Co... - Encephlocele • • Hiatal Hernia//animated//Pathophysiol... - Hiatal Hernia • • Bronchiectasis//Causes, pathophysiolo... - Bronchiectasis • • Heart Block- Part1 //Causes, mechanis... - Heart block • • Inguinal Hernia//Types, Causes,Risk f... - Inguinal hernia • A full list of videos can be accessed on our YouTube channel. • If you haven't subscribed yet, plz do so through the link given below 👇 • / @laymansmedicine • #Acqueous humor dynamics #aqueous humor production #Aqueous humor pathway #intraocular pressure measurement #glaucoma and intraocular pressure #Goldman equation #Tonometry #Occular hypotonya #Ocular hypertension
