France and the Philippines share common values that manifest in various facets of our relationship. Historians such as Ambeth Ocampo and Manolo Quezon have noted that the ideals of the French Revolution provided inspiration to the fight for Philippine independence in 1896, led by Filipino revolutionary heroes like Andres Bonifacio, who read about the history of the French Revolution of 1798, and the Ilustrados who were enlightened by the liberal and democratic ideas of Europe. This shared attachment to democracy and nationhood can also be heard in our national anthems.
