A television program introducing the Qinhu (秦胡), a family of huqins (胡琴, 2-stringed vertical fiddles) developed by Mr. Zhai Zhirong (翟志荣, b. 1952). • Zhai, a native of Fufeng County (扶风县), Baoji (宝鸡市), western Shaanxi province (陕西省), northwest China, served as dean of the Xi'an Conservatory of Music (西安音乐学院) in Xi'an, south-central Shaanxi province from 1996 to 2008. In 2000 he began developing the Qinhu instrument family (which looks similar to the erhu family of instruments, but which substitutes a wooden soundboard for the erhu's snakeskin face, supposedly giving the Qinhu a stronger and clearer upper register). In this video Zhai explains that he selected spruce (rather than paulownia, which is much more widely used in China) for his instruments' soundboards, due to its finer grain. • Since Zhai's initial experiments, the Qinhu has evolved through five generations, been used as a solo instrument, and been adopted for use by traditional Chinese orchestras (and even used alongside Western instruments in symphony orchestras, sometimes playing Western classical music). It has been used primarily in Shaanxi province, with the exception of a notable performance at the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria in 2005. • In this video, Zhai demonstrates four sizes of Qinhu, from highest to lowest: the gaohu (高胡, tuned A-E, like the two highest strings of a violin), erhu (二胡, tuned D-A, like the middle two strings of a violin), zhonghu (中胡, tuned A-E, a fourth below the erhu), and dahu (大胡, tuned D-A, an octave lower than the erhu). • Featured as panelists in this video are: • ● Mr. Piao Dongsheng (朴东升, b. Shenyang, Liaoning, 1934), conductor, composer, and president of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society (中国民族管弦乐学会) • ● Mr. Cao Fengguo (曹凤国, b. 1945), vice chairman of the China Association of Inventions (中国发明协会) • The host is Mr. Zhang Tengyue (张腾岳, b. Lanzhou, Gansu, 1975). • This program, which was probably filmed in a China Central Television studio in Beijing in late 2010, first aired in China on the CCTV-10 channel, January 24, 2011. (创新无限 2011-01-24) • More information: • https://tv.cctv.com/2011/01/24/VIDE13... • https://www.huain.com/musician/zhaizh... • http://www.caili.chinavalue.net/booki... • https://book.douban.com/subject/3054824/ • http://cnjournals.com/view_abstract.a... • https://www.huain.com/musician/pudong... • https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E6%9B%B...
