We bought an Island! Me (Oliver) and my girlfriend (Helena) bought an island in Finland. When we bought the island there was nothing on it but trees, grass and moss, we want to turn the island into our dream log cabin and sauna, all by ourselves. • About two months ago we started working on the island, so far we have been able to build a deck for our 5m bell tent, an outhouse, a tent sauna and a hot shower on the island. Neither of us had any experience when it comes to being in the woods or building before doing this, but so far I have felled my first trees and been able to build a deck out of the logs, put together an outhouse and figure out how to get a hot shower off the grid! • The island is about 2.5 acres (1 hectare) long and skinny in shape. The island has quite a lot of elevation change, with a steep drop off on the south side of the island with the western half being much flatter. The Island is zoned so that we have to build our cabin and sauna on the western half, right now we have our tent on the east side. • At this point we feel like we have a great basecamp and have taken over the eastern side of the island. We want to turn this island into a fully functioning summer cottage with a log cabin, sauna and other amenities. Most of the work is gonna be done in the summer months as the lake freezes in the winter and the weather conditions are tough. • There's a lot of work to be done as the island is over 2.5 acres (1 hectare) and we have no experience in off-grid living, carpentry or building. So any tips or advice are greatly appreciated, as we are planning on doing everything ourselves and transforming the island into our own little paradise. We’ll document every step of the way, starting from smaller builds to finally - an off-grid log cabin. • Our plan for this year is to put up a platform for a glamping tent, build a floating dock and start cutting down trees to begin the process of building our log cabin. • The island is located in Finland and we bought it in 2024.
