It is an apocolyptic take on the situation of the world at the time that is quite fitting for the current events. The Funk Brothers recorded an eleven minute instrumental opus that was cut down for pop radio resulting in a #3 pop hit in 1970. Yes, the times they were a changin' and the tempting Temptations were a comfortable fit for the socially relevant message songs. Motown had a history of sharing songs and having several different artists and producers put out their own version which resulted in the best work being released after a consensus was reached. There was so much talent in that house that covers often bested the originals and took over the pop charts.
