Abia is a state in Nigeria located in south-east geopolitical zone of the country, with seventeen local government areas and its capital at Umuahia. • With an estimated population of over 3million people which are mainly Christians and entrepreneurial. • Covering a total of 5,243.7sqkm land area, Abia State is bounded on the north and northeast by the states of Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi respectively. To the west is Imo State, to the east and southeast are Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State, and to the south is Rivers State. • The southern part of the State lies within the riverine part of Nigeria, it is a low-lying tropical rainforest with some oil-palm brush, the southern portion gets • heavy rainfall of about 2,400 millimetres per year and is especially intense between the months of April through October. • The rest of the State is moderately high plain and wooded savanna . • The state has two distinct rivers the Imo river and Aba River which flow into the Atlantic Ocean through Akwa Ibom State. • History has it that the name ‘Abia’ was coined from the first letters of four groups of people namely: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato and Afikpo, now in Ebonyi State. • At the country's independence in 1960, Abia was part of the then Eastern Region. From 27th May, 1967, it became a part of the East Central State, created by the then Head of the Federal Military Government, General Yakubu Gowon. • On 3rd February, 1976, East Central State was split into two states(Anambra and Imo) by the Federal Military Government headed by General Murtala Mohammed. On 27th August, 1991, the Federal Military Government under General lbrahim Babangida carved out Abia State from Imo State, bringing to thirty the number of states in Nigeria. • People Culture: • Abia people are of the Igbo ethnic group who predominates much of the Southeastern part of Nigeria. Their traditional language is Igbo with English widely spoken and serves as the official language in governance and business. • Abia’s 2.4m people are predominantly Christians of different denominations. There are also a good number of Muslims, with adherents of the two religions living together peacefully. • The major commercial city is Aba, which was formerly a British colonial government outpost. • Abia is also said to be one of the states of the Niger Delta region where crude oil is found. • It is not just an oil producing state though; it also adds a rich agricultural importance to the economy of Nigeria with crops like yam, maize, potatoes, rice, cashew, plantain and cassava. • It's also the 5th most industrialized state in the country, and has the 4th highest index of human development in the country, with numerous economic activities and fast growing populations as recorded by the United nations early u2018. The state also houses the biggest cattle market In Nigeria. • They have some cultural display such as Atilogwu dance also known as Acrobatic dance,the War dance also known as Ikirikpi-ogu, masquerade dance and many others... • Food: • There are many nutritious dishes that are common to the people of Abia state in particular, but also cuts across Igbos generally. • Abacha also popularly known as the African Salad. Abacha is a popular cassava dish native to the Igbos and served throughout Igbo land in eastern Nigeria. This is mostly eaten as a snack or a full meal. • Their core food is soups. • They have popular soups like Oha, Onugbu, Egwusi and Nsala (White pepper soup). Yam is a staple food for them and is eaten boiled or pounded with soups. • Vegetable yam pottage • Nkwobi • Isiewu • Ọkpa • Marital rite in this part of the country is usually festival and colourful. • Igbo ladies are said to be one of the most beautiful ladies in Nigeria, so a lot is expected of any man opting to take one as a bride. • The Igbo lady being well-trained, industrious, beautiful as well as accommodating, are said to be the contributing factors to why their bride price is one of if not the highest in Nigeria. • They are not left out with interesting tourists attractions.
