Lesson on Agoraphobia: Diagnosis, Symptoms and Treatment. Agoraphobia is the fear of the marketplace but more specifically, it is a recurrent fear/anxiety about at least 2 different situations due to the the fear of having panic-like symptoms or embarrassing symptoms during these situations. Agoraphobia is similar to panic attacks and panic disorder, and often panic disorder co-occurs with agoraphobia, with individuals avoiding different situations due to the fear of having a panic attack; however, it is not necessary to panic attacks or panic disorder in order to have agoraphobia. Therefore, agoraphobia can be thought of on the panic disorder spectrum but also as a distinct disorder of its own.
