The heart is histologically made up of the outer layer which is the epicardium, the middle layer, the myocardium and the inner layer, the endocardium. The heart is a muscular pump that propels blood at high pressure to the cells of the body through the blood vessels. The pumping action is centered around the middle thick muscular layer of the heart, the myocardium.
