NaHCO3 + HCl = NaCl + H2O + CO2 • 2. The NaHCO3 is more dense than the HCl solution so it sinks to the bottom, a neutralization reaction takes place between the sodium bicarbonate and the hydrochloric acid • 3. At different depths, the concentration of the hydrogen (H+) ions vary, producing layers of varying pH.
