Happy Engineers day • September 15th is celebrated as national engineers day. It was the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. • 1. He was born in 1861 in a Telugu family at Chikkaballapur located at a distance of around 60 km from Bengaluru, Karnataka. • 2. After school, he pursued a diploma in civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune. • 3. His first major achievement was Khadakwasla Dam in Pune. Built with innovative floodgates technology. • 4. Then, the king of Mysore Krishna Raja Wodiyar IV made Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya chief engineer of Mysore state. King was impressed by his leadership qualities and later made him Diwan (Prime minister) of Mysore state. • 5. There he built, Krishna raja sagara dam. Which is one of the India’s largest dam till date. This helped the Mysore and Karnataka state for irrigation and drinking water. • 6. At the same time. In 1908 Musi river floods have hit the Hyderabad city. So, 6th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mahboob Ali Khan requested Sir M Visvesvaraya, to sort out the issue. There he have built, Osman sagar and Himayat sagar reservoirs. Till date they are helping the people of Hyderabad. • 7. For his service and contribution in irrigation and civil engineering fields.
