(26 May 1995) English/Nat • • An eighth juror was dismissed from the OJ Simpson murder trial Thursday. • • No reason was given for the dismissal which reduced the number • of alternates to only four and provoked fears the trial might not run its full course. • • Earlier, a scientist from the Los Angeles Police Department had returned to the stand to give evidence which could be crucial to the prosecution case against Simpson. • • A pair of OJ Simpson's blood-stained socks were unwrapped in the courtroom Thursday. • • The prosecution hopes to prove that the blood on the socks belongs to both Simpson and his murdered ex-wife, Nicole. • • If they can substantiate their claim, it could punch a hole in the defence theory that the blood was planted by the Los Angeles police. • • SOUNDBITE: • Initially when you laid them out did you notice any discoloured areas? • On one of the socks there was something towards the toe area that seemed like a discolouration and on the other sock there was something in the ankle area. • SUPER CAPTIONS: Rockne Harmon - Prosecutor and Collin Yamauchi - Los Angeles Police Department scientist • • The prosecutor showed the court photographs of defence consultant Dr Henry Lee examining the bloodstained socks. • • They showed Dr Lee wasn't wearing a lab coat or a hair net at the time. • • Meanwhile, question remains whether Judge Lance Ito will allow the defence to introduce as evidence a statement Simpson gave to the police the day after the murders. • • If the defense succeeds in telling jurors about the statement, it could mean that Simpson's story could be told to jurors without him having to testify and endure hostile cross-examination. • • The whole debate was started Wednesday when Yamauchi said he once thought Simpson had an airtight alibi . • • Prosecutor Marcia Clark dramatically pleaded the prosecution's interpretation of the word. • • SOUNDBITE: • That was this witness's opinion your honour. What does that have to do with the defendant's statement....which by the way does not state that he had an airtight alibi because he was in Chicago. That was not his statement. So how could we possibly have a three fifty six on that? • SUPER CAPTION: Marcia Clark - Prosecutor • • Judge Ito admonished Simpson's defence attorney Johnnie Cochran for describing Clark's outburst as hysterical. • • A lawyer representing the family of Nicole Brown Simpson also expressed her outrage over Cochran's choice of word. • • SOUNDBITE: • The word hysterical is not ordinarily used to describe men. The word hysterical has a long and ugly sexist history. • SUPER CAPTION: Gloria Allred - Lawyer • • But the alibi issue was overshadowed by the news that another juror had been dropped. • • Before the latest ouster, the jury included seven blacks - three • whites and two Hispanics. There were nine women and three men. • • The alternate pool consists of four blacks and one white; four • women and one man. The replacement will be chosen at random. • • If the number of jurors drops below 12, it would take an agreement by both sides to continue with the trial. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
